Long before streaming platforms built billion-dollar media strategies around live sports, Ted Turner understood what few others in television did: The power of sports was in distribution.

Turner, who died May 6 at age 87 from complications of Lewy body dementia, used satellite television and his TBS superstation to transform the Atlanta Braves from a regional franchise into a national brand, helping reshape the economics of sports broadcasting in the process. It became a catalyst for the modern sports media evolution, where local teams can become national brands and live sports populate their own television ecosystem.

Ted Turner: “A Bold Man”

“Ted Turner was a bold man, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, and even those who at times strongly disagreed with him respected him,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement on X. “That legacy continues to impact us today.”

His was a life that included roles as a network executive, owner of multiple major league franchises, steward of some of Hollywood’s most valuable media properties and captain of an America’s Cup sailing team. Turner’s early vision for sports television fundamentally changed how sports content is distributed, monetized and consumed—from direct-to-consumer media to global fandom.

Before Turner, Sports Television Was Regional

Before Turner executed his vision, sports coverage was primarily regional, television rights were geographically restricted and most fans were exposed to teams based on their proximity to them.

MORE FOR YOU

Turner’s self-proclaimed “greatest achievement” was creation of CNN, the 24-hour news network he launched in 1980 during the early days of cable television. But even before reshaping cable news, Turner had already begun reshaping sports television.

The Superstation That Changed Sports Distribution

After purchasing the Braves and the Atlanta Hawks in 1976, he recognized that live sports could become the foundation of a national television business. He aired all 162 Braves games on Atlanta station WTCG at a fraction of the price of scripted content.

He later transformed TBS, the Turner Broadcasting System, into a national “superstation” by using satellites to distribute the signal to cable systems across the United States. That satellite technology transformed a local Atlanta station into national must-watch television, encouraging cable subscriptions and offering relatively inexpensive programming that built viewer loyalty.

Turner Predicted Modern Sports Media Economics

The model fueled the growth of cable television, and today’s streaming platforms operate under much of the same business logic. Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Netflix and YouTube TV now invest billions into live sports rights because sports remain one of the few forms of appointment viewing that attracts mass audiences in real time.

Changing The Style Of Sports Television

His influence extended beyond strategy into the presentation of sports television itself. Turner’s programming embraced personality, entertainment and spectacle in ways that shaped modern sports broadcasting. TNT—Turner Network Television—became synonymous with NBA coverage, while “Inside the NBA” helped redefine studio programming by combining personality-driven coverage with analysis and game highlights.

Turner, a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, also embraced a breadth of programming to feed the need for around-the-clock content, including professional wrestling through WCW.

In the end, the man known as “Captain Outrageous” did far more than just televise sports. What he started with Braves games broadcast from a local Atlanta station ultimately became the blueprint for the modern sports media economy.
