Tom Petty Performs At Pepsi Live At Rogers Arena

It's been almost 10 years since Tom Petty passed away after a decades-long career as a beloved singer and songwriter. Since then, Petty's discography has continued to grow, and as is the case with so many superstars who have died, there remains an intense interest in anything with his name attached.

Petty claims a new win on several of Billboard's albums charts this week as his Record Store Day offering Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 launches on multiple rosters, becoming a fast bestseller in America.

Tom Petty’s Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 Debuts

Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 enters a pair of rankings published by Billboard, both of which are powered entirely by purchases, and it's an instant top 20 success on the two. The live recording launches at No. 13 on the Vinyl Albums list and at No. 19 on the Top Album Sales ranking. The first of those two is centered entirely around sales on wax, while the Top Album Sales chart does include purchases on that format, as well as CD, cassette, and digital downloads.

Tom Petty Adds to His Career Wins on Two Tallies

Coincidentally, as Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 enters the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 13, it becomes Petty's thirteenth appearance. He nearly manages the same showing on the Top Album Sales tally, where the set is his twenty-first charting effort, though it starts two spaces above that number.

Tom Petty Returned to Sales Charts With Long After Dark

It's been less than two years since Petty scored a new hit on either roster. In November 2024, Long After Dark surged into the top 10 on both Billboard charts. The majority of his placements on either rundown have been added to his charting discography since his death, which speaks to Petty's continued popularity and the amount of music he left behind.

Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 Arrived for Record Store Day

Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 is one of dozens of debuts across Billboard's charts associated with Record Store Day. The album dropped on April 18 and is limited to 8,000 copies. Originally recorded at the Boston, MA venue which shares its name with the title of the set, longtime fans of Petty have been familiar with the shows due to bootleg recordings that have been passed around for many years. The live effort includes 10 songs and features favorites like "I Fought the Law," "Anything That's Rock and Roll," and "Don't Bring Me Down," among others.

Tom Petty Follows Hilary Duff, Bruno Mars and Pink Floyd

On the Vinyl Albums chart, Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978 stands out as the eighth-highest-rising debut. It's the tenth-loftiest entrant on the even more competitive Top Album Sales tally. On both lists, Petty is beaten by new arrivals from Fall Out Boy, Hilary Duff, Jeff Buckley, Bruno Mars, and Pink Floyd.

Tom Petty’s Greatest Hits Climbs Alongside His New Album

Two full-lengths by Petty appear on Billboard's rankings at the moment, but there's no crossover between them, and the late, great musician does not double up on any list. Thanks in part to the release of Live at Paradise Rock Club, 1978, his Greatest Hits, which, like the new set, also credits his famed backing band the Heartbreakers, improves on the Top Rock Albums (No. 11) and Top Rock and Alternative Albums charts (No. 13) and the Billboard 200 (No. 74).
