Marta Kostyuk defeated fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in three sets to reach the French Open semifinals on Tuesday, and then dedicated the win to the victims of the war with Russia.

No. 15 Kostyuk defeated No. 7 Svitolina, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to reach her first major semifinal against Russia’s Mirra Andreeva and then broke down in tears.

“First, I want to start with this historical match that we played with Elina,” Kostyuk said on court. "We had very difficult night again in Ukraine, especially in Kiev, so many people dead, and I want to give this match to Ukrainian people and to their resilience.

“Slava Ukraini,” she added while wiping away tears.

Fans draped in Ukrainian flags and holding up signs that read “Ukraine” and “Kostyuk” smiled and clapped in support.

After her first match, Kostyuk showed pictures of a Russian missile landing about a 100 meters from her home.

According to The Associated Press:

Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least 18 civilians and wounding 131 others, authorities said Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has escalated Moscow’s aerial campaign in recent weeks in an apparent bid to take advantage of Ukraine’s shortage of U.S.-made air defense systems and persuade an increasingly pessimistic audience at home that Moscow is prevailing in the 4-year-old war.

Emergency rescue crews digging through the wreckage of apartment buildings pulled out the bodies of a 3-year-old child as well as those of a woman and her 8-year-old son in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, officials said.

The attack stretched past dawn, with explosions reverberating across cities. Officials said 12 people were killed in Dnipro and six in Kyiv.

Kostyuk has now won 17 straight matches, including a straight-sets win over No. 3 seed and four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek in the fourth round, and will next face Andreeva in a rematch of the Madrid final won by the Ukrainian in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) on May 2.

Andreeva routed Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea, 6-0, 6-3, to reach her second Roland Garros semifinal.

Kostyuk has a policy of not shaking the hands of Russian players and they did not shake hands after that match, nor did Kostyuk mention Andreeva by name. Andreeva cried after that match because of the loss and the situation.

“I would like to congratulate Marta and her entire team for this great victory today, as well as for your run on clay,” Andreeva said then. "You have won two tournaments in a row. You play really well. Congratulations again on the win today."

Speaking on TNT, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki said the Russian players are afraid to speak out against the war because they may have family at home who would face retribution.

“It’s a really tough situation for the players,” she said.
