John Nolan, the uncle of filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, who starred in two Batman films and the CBS series Person of Interest, has died.
John Nolan died Saturday, according to the U.K.’s Stratford-upon-Avon Herald. He was 87.
The prolific actor appeared in four of Christopher Nolan’s films, including a role as “The Policeman” in his nephew’s debut feature, Following. John Nolan also played Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in 2005’s Batman Begins and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and appeared in a cameo as a blind man in 2017’s Dunkirk.

On TV, John Nolan starred in the recurring role of former MI6 Agent John Greer in Jonathan Nolan’s CBS cyberthriller series Person of Interest, appearing in 28 episodes in Seasons 2 through 5 from 2013 to 2016.
The younger brother of Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s father, Brendan Nolan, John Francis Nolan was born on May 22, 1938, in London. In addition to his screen roles, John Nolan was a veteran stage actor as a member of the Royal Court Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
According to the Stratford-upon-Avon-Herald, Nolan also directed stage productions and taught classes at Stratford College.
In addition to his theater work, John Nolan appeared in more than 30 movies and TV series throughout his acting career.
Nolan’s screen debut came in 1967 in a bit part in Patrick McGoohan’s classic British spy series The Prisoner. His breakthrough role came in 1970 as the title character in the BBC miniseries drama Daniel Deronda, which was followed by a recurring role in the BBC’s sci-fi drama Doomwatch, where he appeared in 10 episodes from 1970 to 1971.

Nolan’s final screen role came in 2024 when he appeared in a guest role in an episode of the HBO Max series Dune: Prophecy as Speaker for the Hall.
Nolan is survived by his wife, Kim Hartman, their two children Miranda and Tom, and two grandchildren.
