It’s rare for a comic book to get an original theme song—let alone an original theme song written and performed by one of the Jonas Brothers. But hey, if you’ve got Franklin Jonas co-writing your series, why not call on his musical talents?
That’s exactly what Curt Pires (Olympia, Indigo Children) did as he and the youngest Jonas sibling set out to write Fireborn, an action-fantasy saga spun out of Pires’ Lost Fantasy universe and illustrated by Patrick Mulholland (Zero Jumper, Mom Breaks the Internet). The track, which Forbes Entertainment can exclusively reveal, is a head-banging ditty worthy of Bill Preston and Ted Logan.
“We are so excited by the amazing response to Fireborn’s BOMBASTIC, BALLS-TO-THE-WALLS, BALLISTIC debut!” Jonas said in a statement. “In honor of Fireborn’s nostalgic grittiness, my band—Franklin Jonas & the Byzantines—and I cooked up this 90/00’s inspired theme song for the series. Just like Fireborn, it fully commits to its edginess!”
Added Pires: “Franklin’s track for Fireborn is as awesome and unapologetic as our book is—and I’m so excited to be sharing it with our fans and readers! Fireborn is just getting started, come aboard the ride.”
Fireborn centers around Aaron Hillburg, a bratty rich kid who shirks responsibility and hates his billionaire dad. That sophomoric existence suddenly changes after Aaron bonds with a mysterious dragon egg and discovers his hidden magical lineage. And with great power comes a slew of villains— a violent outlaw wizard, biker cultist, and supernatural cultist—looking to steal the power for themselves, even if it means prying the egg from Aaron’s cold, dead corpse.
“With Fireborn, I really want to try to give Aaron the room. It’s going to take a long time, I think, for him to understand the weight of his newfound purpose,” Jonas explained on a recent episode of the Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast. “I want to watch him struggle through that, I want to see the hiccups that come along with this newfound power, and I want to see him uncover something that he didn’t exactly realize he was stepping into. It’s cool to imagine where this story can go with a character that is so prone to self-destruction, in a sense, but, at the end of the day, has a good heart, has good intentions."
Pires likened the hero to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, while teasing the introduction of crucial supporting characters as the story continues.
“Who’s his Mary Jane? Who’s his mentor figure? The other half of what always made the Spider-Man stuff great. Not just the reluctant hero stuff," he explained. “We’re excited to build that element of it and that will dovetail nicely into the fantasy/superhero stuff. That’s one thing where we’re like, ‘Okay, let’s just take some time to build out the character’s relationships and emotional landscape alongside of finding new, cool villains for him to punch in the face.’"
In addition to the exclusive track, Image Comics also provided a collection of pages from the second issue (out May 27). As you’ll see, Aaron is still adjusting—to say the least—to his new status as public enemy number one across New York City and the fantastical World Beneath.
