World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 4 Novak Djokovic were drawn to potentially meet in the Italian Open final in Rome on May 17.

The draw was held Monday ahead of the start of the tournament this week.

Both Sinner and Djokovic have a bye in the first round of the Masters 1000 event.

Sinner could potentially face world No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime or No. 9 Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

Djokovic could meet No. 3 Alexander Zverev or No. 8 Alex De Minaur in the semis.

Sinner, 24, holds a a 6-5 lead on the 38-year-old Djokovic, but the Serbian legend won their most recent matchup in five sets in the Australian Open semifinals.

Djokovic last played at Indian Wells in March, where he lost to Jack Draper in the fourth round. He then withdrew from the Miami Open with a right shoulder injury.

After routing Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in 57 minutes to win the Madrid title on Sunday, Sinner has now won the first four ATP Masters 1000 events of the year – Indian Wells, Miami Open, Monte-Carlo and Madrid -- breaking a tie with Djokovic, who won the first three in 2015. Sinner has won five straight Masters 1000 events overall, plus the 2025 Year-End Championship.

He has won eight of the nine Masters 1000s in his career, and will seek to tie Djokovic’s record of nine in Rome.

Djokovic is also bidding to win a record 25th major title in 2026 after reaching the semifinals of all four Slams in 2025. His last major came at the 2023 U.S. Open.
