Topline

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said President Donald Trump “kicked out” his inner circle who had previously supported him and replaced it with lawmakers who she claimed previously “hated” the president and mocked him behind his back, after he returned to the White House.

Key Facts

Greene appeared on former Fox News host and right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson’s podcast on Thursday night as the two Trump allies-turned-critics discussed the state of the Republican party and the Trump administration.

Greene claimed that things changed with Trump when he returned to the White House last year, and “in a matter of months,” people in his inner circle who “fought for him when no one else would,” were pushed out.

The former Georgia congresswoman used the example of Rep Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., who she claimed: “hated Donald Trump, made fun of him constantly, mimicked him, making fun of his voice,” and Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., whom she labeled as “the worst.”

Greene claimed the likes of Lawler and “other guys” like him were the ones who were suddenly being “ushered into the White House for meetings and all kinds of things.”

Carlson asked her if the group that “hated Trump” were “servants of Israel” and Greene responded, “yeah…100%.”

What Has Greene Previously Said About Republicans Mocking Trump?

In an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes that aired late last year, Greene was asked if Republicans in Congress were supporting Trump out of fear. She said, “I think they're terrified to step out of line and get a nasty Truth Social post on them,” and claimed they speak differently about the president behind him, adding, “it would shock people.” Greene added: “I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him, making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him, to when he won the primary in 2024, they all started…kissing his ass and decided to put on a MAGA hat for the first time.”

Key Background

Carlson has been among a group of prominent right-wing figures who have turned on Trump over the past few months and criticized his decision to go to war with Iran. Last week, Carlson said he would be “tormented” by his support for Trump for a “long time.” In a podcast episode with his brother Buckley Carlson, a former Trump speechwriter, the former Fox News host said, “And I want to say I’m sorry for misleading people. It was not intentional, that’s all I’ll say.” He told his brother: “You and I and everyone else who supported him – you wrote speeches for him, I campaigned for him – I mean, we’re implicated in this for sure.”
