Inside Harlan Coben’s Winning Formula For Netflix Hits Like ‘I Will Find You’

Harlan Coben has done it again! His latest book-to-screen adaptation, I Will Find You, claimed the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s English TV list with 24 million views within days of its June 18 premiere.

This series marks Coben’s 13th adaptation for Netflix. Based on his bestselling novel of the same name, I Will Find You has quickly become another must-watch thriller for viewers worldwide. It is also being celebrated as the biggest original Netflix series debut of 2026.

Netflix shows no signs of slowing its partnership with Coben. Among the projects in development is an adaptation of the Myron Bolitar book series, Coben’s longest-running and most iconic collection of novels, spanning 12 books.

In I Will Find You, Sam Worthington stars as David Burroughs, a father serving a life sentence for the murder of his son five years earlier.

David has always maintained his innocence, but he never had the evidence to prove it. Everything changes when his sister-in-law Rachel (Britt Lower) arrives with proof that his son may still be alive. Determined to uncover the truth, David escapes prison and finds himself entangled in a far-reaching conspiracy that sends him on the run.

Ahead of the eight-episode series premiere, Worthington and Lower discussed the complex relationship between their characters. Although David was married to Rachel’s sister, their bond often feels deeper than a typical family connection.

When asked about their dynamic, Worthington acknowledged that it’s odd because she’s his sister-in-law. “We talked about where it ends up. There's all that power in a simple gesture. There's a gesture towards the end, which we liked, because it gives an open-ended journey to the relationship.”

He confirmed that he liked the open ending. “It’s better than it being tied up in a nice, neat bow because the whole story is about hope and what-ifs and possibilities. I think it’s cool to give it back to the audience and let them decide what happens next.”

Lower reflected on portraying a woman willing to risk everything for someone who may or may not be innocent.

“This is a character much like David, who has lost everything. She was a decorated journalist in her field, and she’s now teaching, which she loves, but she’s lost this identity. She’s on a very clear and distinct mission to help David find his son Matthew, and her conviction as to David's innocence has been so strong, even from the start. I really admired that about her, and her loyalty to her family, and her integrity as a journalist.”

Worthington believes that emotional grounding is a major reason Coben’s stories resonate with audiences. When asked what it means to be a part of a Harlan Coben adaptation, both actors described it as a career highlight.

“I think Harlan has created his own kind of genre,” said Worthington. “He creates a puzzle that only he can put together. You know going in that there’s the twists and the turns and cliffhangers, red herrings, and switchbacks. We know as actors that it's our job to try and find the authenticity amongst all the Harlan Pulp that will ground the story and allow the audience to go with the characters on these twists and turns.”

Worthington revealed that even his son became obsessed with solving the mystery.

“We managed to get episodes early. After every episode, he was like, ‘Alright, I figured out who it is.’ After the second episode, he’s like, ‘Nah, I was wrong, but now I figured out who it is.’ And it kept going and going and going. And he was like, ‘Alright, I've got no idea now who it is.’ My son doesn't really talk to me about my work or anything like that, but he really enjoyed it. I think that's where Harlan's stuff connects. You know, it's about ordinary families on extraordinary adventures.”

Lower echoed that sentiment.

“Our characters are really in the front seat of that surprise as well. We’re like the audience. We don’t know what’s coming next either. Rachel is a journalist who's not used to being inside of a story that's out of her control. And David is a fugitive, but he's actually not a criminal. So, them breaking the law together on this mission is totally out of their comfort zone.”

In a separate interview, Coben sat down with series creator Robert Hull to discuss the thriller, which also stars Milo Ventimiglia, Logan Browning, Erin Richards, Jonathan Tucker, Madeleine Stowe, and Chi McBride.

Asked how he consistently creates stories that audiences binge-watch, Coben pointed to the emotional core of his work.

“Yes, these are thrillers. And yes, I can make your pulse race. I can make your mind race, but I think the key is making your heart race. These are stories of hope,” he explained.

“This is a story of hope,” Coben continued. “This is a father who has nothing left. He’s not breaking out of prison to prove his innocence, which we've seen before. He's breaking out for the chance of finding his son, whom people think he murdered, who might be alive. I can't imagine a greater hope than that.”

That emphasis on hope is central to Coben’s storytelling. While he often pushes his characters to their limits, he always gives them a reason to keep fighting.

When asked how he constructs his famously intricate plots, Coben revealed that he starts with the ending.

“My secret sauce or my secret formula, which isn’t secret, I'm not the only one who does it, is that I know the ending before I start. A lot of writers do not.”

His upcoming memoir and writing guide, Plot Twist: Life, Craft, and the Messy First Draft, arrives later this year. While researching the book, Coben spoke with dozens of authors and estimated that roughly 65% begin writing without knowing the ending, while 35% do.

Of the 38 books he has written, only one started without a planned conclusion.

“When I know the ending, I can make a journey that actually twists and turns more than if I don’t know the ending. I can make twists and turns with that kind of confidence as I go on.”

I Will Find You, which was filmed in Canada, arrived with a built-in audience. Many viewers had already binged previous Coben adaptations, including Run Away, Fool Me Once, Safe, The Woods, The Innocent, Gone for Good, Stay Close, Hold Tight, The Stranger, Missing You, Just One Look, and Caught.

The numbers reflect that loyalty. Earlier this year, Run Away spent four consecutive weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, generating 38 million views and reaching the Top 10 in 84 countries.

Before that, Fool Me Once became one of Netflix’s most-watched titles of 2024, surpassing 98 million views in its first 91 days and earning a place on the platform’s all-time Most Popular TV list.

The success of the adaptations has also boosted interest in Coben’s books, driving sales and introducing new readers to his work.

For Coben, however, the true secret behind his success is not the twists, cliffhangers, or red herrings. It is the emotional connection audiences feel with the people at the center of his stories.

“It’s one thing to twist and pull you, do the sleight of hand. But if it’s not moving your heart, if you don't care about these characters, if you don't care if David finds his son, it's not going to work.”
