Key Facts

The incident occurred Friday morning and there were no injuries, the company said in a statement to Forbes.

In a note to staffers, the company reportedly said property damage was “minimal.”

Open AI said it was cooperating with an investigation into the attack and the threat, and that a suspect has been arrested.

The latest incident comes days after the New Yorker published a year-long investigation into Altman, painting him as an ethically untrustworthy leader in the AI race, and as Elon Musk seeks to have him removed from OpenAI over fraud claims.

Crucial Quote

"Thankfully, no one was hurt,” Open AI said in a statement to Forbes. We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe.”

Big Number

$27 million. That’s how much Altman, 40, paid for a mansion with two residences and an infinity pool in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood in 2020. He’s since become entrenched in a legal battle with its developer over claims the house is "plagued by shoddy construction." He also owns three adjacent homes, which he reportedly bought for $12.8 million each last year.

Key Background

This isn’t the first time the Open AI office has been the target of security threats. OpenAI's office was locked down last year after a member of the protest group Stop AI reportedly "expressed interest in causing physical harm to OpenAI employees." Later reports indicated the threats may have come from one of Stop AI’s co-founders, and the group later put out a statement distancing themselves from the individual. There have also been arrests at protests outside OpenAI headquarters, and a data center in the United Arab Emirates backed by OpenAI was recently the target of threats from Iran amid the U.S. ongoing war in the country.
