Obsession
Blumhouse
While I just wrote this sort of article about Adam Scott’s Hokum not that long ago, just a couple weeks later, that film’s score has fallen a bit, and now we have the highest-rated horror movie of 2026 out this coming week. Dozens of reviews are in, and it’s a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. No easy feat.
The movie is Obsession, and even if Hokum did not have its initial 94% Rotten Tomatoes score drop to a still-good 88%, Obsession still would have taken the crown with its 96%. Here’s the synopsis of the film:
“After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.”
Unlike most of the other good horror movies of the year, I would be surprised if you knew any of the names in the cast. Michael Johnston plays the wishing boy in question, where he’s mainly just been in a handful of short TV show arcs. But I am more excited to see Inde Navarrette as the central obsessed girl, as I watched her for four seasons of Superman and Lois, the very good TV adaptation of the hero, where she played the daughter of Lana Lang, and sometimes-love interest to Jordan Kent. The trailers have her looking pretty nuts and going way outside the bounds of that earlier role:
MORE FOR YOU
If we’re looking over the other horror movies of the year, and there have been some good ones, here’s how it stacks up to the rest of them as it sits on its #1 perch, at least for now, complete with the descriptions I wrote up last time, if you’re wondering what I thought of the ones I’ve seen.
Obsession sounds and looks fantastic and will hit theaters on May 15. I’ll be there.
