Netflix’s Lord of the Flies, the BBC’s adaptation of William Golding’s classic dystopian novel, is earning near-unanimous approval from Rotten Tomatoes critics.

A four-part miniseries, Lord of the Flies originally was released on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer in February and debuted on Netflix on Monday. Lord of the Flies was previously adapted as a feature film in 1963 and 1990.

Based on Golding’s classic 1954 novel of the same name, the new version of Lord of the Flies follows the plight of a group of young boys who find themselves stranded on a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean after their plane crashes. With no adult survivors to lead them, the boys form their own society in a bid to survive until they are rescued, but soon the society devolves into chaos and savagery when one of the boys forms a rebellion.

Written by Jack Thorne (Adolescence) and directed by Mark Munden, Lord of the Flies stars David McKenna, Ike Talbut, Winston Sawyers and Lox Pratt as the key characters of Piggy, Simon, Ralph and Jack, respectively.

Lord of the Flies currently has a critics’ score of 95% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, based on 37 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the series reads, “Fleshing out William Goldman's text with thoughtful observations about boyhood and sharpened by a uniformly terrific troupe of child actors, this retelling of Lord of the Flies seizes the conch shell and commands attention.”

RT users, however, have a decidedly different reaction to Lord of the Flies, awarding the miniseries a “rotten” Popcornmeter score of 57% based on 50-plus verified user ratings. RT’s Audience Summary for the miniseries is still pending.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Lord Of The Flies’?

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter is among the top critics on RT who gives the new version of Lord of the Flies a “fresh” score, writing in his review summary, “For all the inevitable comparisons one might be tempted to make, this Lord of the Flies is wholly its own thing, as audacious and yet devoted to its source material as any TV adaptation in recent memory.”

Nick Schager of The Daily Beast also gives Lord of the Flies a “fresh” score on RT, writing, “Buoyed by terrific performances from its pint-sized cast, it’s a powerhouse that does justice to the enduring literary classic.”

Judy Berman of TIME Magazine is also impressed with the Lord of the Flies miniseries, writing in her “fresh” RT review summary, “Bolstered by poetic visuals and stunning performances from the young cast, Thorne’s psychological approach offers profound insight into the unconscious impulses that underlie our current political crises.”

Claudia Cockerell of the London Evening Standard also deems the miniseries “fresh,” writing in her RT review summary, “This slick, visually rich adaptation of Lord of the Flies is broadly faithful to the novel, though the characters are glossed with an added layer of humanity.”

Lucy Mangan of the Guardian is the only top critic on RT to give Lord of the Flies a “rotten” score to date. In her RT review summary, Mangan writes that the miniseries “falls victim to the modern curse of psychology ... It reduces the elemental power of the story, along with its point, which is how much evil there is in a man and whether it can be overcome.”

All four episodes of Lord of the Flies are streaming on Netflix.
