Championship Series - Cleveland Guardians v. New York Yankees - Game Two

The Boston Red Sox have spent much of the season searching for bullpen consistency, and that need became increasingly apparent as veteran reliever Tommy Kahnle continued to dominate at Triple-A Worcester.

Kahnle was pitching well for the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate this season and, after spending 11 seasons in the big leagues, the right-hander appeared to be positioning himself either for a major league opportunity in Boston or the chance to pursue one elsewhere.

“Veteran reliever Tommy Kahnle, who has a 1.40 ERA in 18 games at Triple-A Worcester, can opt out of his minor league deal and become a free agent Monday (June 1),” Chris Cotillo reported for MassLive last week. “According to a source with knowledge of Kahnle’s thinking, the righty ‘100 percent’ plans to hit free agency if he is not added to Boston’s roster.”

And once that deadline passed, evidently without the Red Sox calling him up to the 40-man roster, it seems Kahnle has gone missing without an official update for the media.

“Tommy Kahnle is not here in Worcester at Polar Park but is technically still on the roster,” the Telegram & Gazette’s Tommy Cassell reported.

Adding further intrigue, Cassell noted that Kahnle’s name did appear on the lineup card for the WooSox game on Tuesday though it seems he did bid manager Iggy Suarez farewell after the team’s game against the New York Yankees affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders last week.

“We’ll definitely miss him if he's not here,” Suarez told Cassell. “But yeah, other than that, that's all. That's all I know on his end.”

Boston Red Sox Missing Former New York Yankees Pitcher After Opt Out

The Red Sox might feel like they have no room on the big-league roster for Kahnle, though it’s possible the team will still make room for him.

In the meantime, some Yankees fans might appreciate that Kahnle is giving their biggest rival’s affiliate a bit of trouble. Kahnle has worn the Yankees’ pinstripes across six seasons in two different stints.

The veteran signed a minor league deal with Boston after spending the 2025 season with the Detroit Tigers. He was a member of the New York Yankees in 2024, when he posted a 2.11 ERA across 50 appearances and helped with the run to the World Series.

Whether Kahnle's absence is the precursor to a roster move, a formal opt-out or another transaction remains unclear.

For the Red Sox, the situation could soon force a decision on a veteran reliever who has done everything possible to earn another major league opportunity. For Kahnle, the next few days could determine whether his path back to the majors runs through Boston or another organization entirely, perhaps even back with the Yankees for a third time.
