Secret Service agents exchanged gunfire with a “suspicious individual” near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon, shortly before Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade traveled through the area, the agency’s deputy director said—nine days after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner involving a man prosecutors say was targeting members of the Trump administration.
One juvenile bystander was hit during the exchange of gunfire, authorities said.

Plainclothes officers that patrol outside the White House identified a “suspicious individual” at the Washington Monument around 3:30 p.m. EDT, the agency’s deputy director Matt Quinn said at a press conference.
The suspect had a “visual print” of a firearm, Quinn said, and fled after uniformed Secret Service officers approached, Quinn said.
He said the suspect opened fire at the agents, who returned fire—hitting the suspect, who has since been hospitalized.
At least one bystander was hit, Quinn said, identified only as a juvenile who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Quinn said investigators believe the suspect shot the bystander, noting “everything I've seen leads me to believe and the investigators believe he was struck by the suspect.”
The incident happened shortly before Vance’s motorcade passed through the area, Quinn said. However, the deputy director also said investigators don’t believe the suspect approached or menaced the motorcade. The suspect was also not on the White House property, but noted he was “not far at all.” When asked if investigators thought the incident had anything to do with the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Quinn said, “I can't say. I'm not going to guess on that.”
The shooting on Monday comes after a gunman tried to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, allegedly exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers outside the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Video footage released by the FBI appears to indicate the suspect fired at a Secret Service agent first, before law enforcement officers fired multiple rounds at him. The suspected gunman was not struck, but was quickly arrested and has since been charged with attempting to assassinate the president.
