Hulu’s revival of Malcolm in the Middle, starring Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, is likely one last hurrah for the beloved sitcom despite strong viewership numbers and enthusiasm for the show by its star and creator.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair — a four-episode mini-series event— premiered Friday on Hulu on Disney+, 20 years after the hit show ended its seven-season run on Fox in 2006.

The revival finds Malcolm (Muniz) — who has been avoiding his eccentric family for 10 years — pulled back into their orbit when dad Hal (Cranston) and mom Lois (Kaczmarek) want him and his teen daughter (Keely Karsten) to come home for their 40th anniversary party.

Viewers certainly wanted Malcolm and his family back in their lives. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney reported Monday that Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair attracted 8.1 million views worldwide in the first three days. As such, the numbers for the series revival — which is streaming on Hulu on Disney+ in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally — are the best season premiere of any new show on the platform.

While big viewership goes a long way when an additional season is being considered by any studio, the talent obviously needs to be on board for more, too.

So, while Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair attracted a big audience, the series’ creator, Linwood Boomer, appears to be content with the series ending with Life’s Still Unfair, even though the door is open for more.

Asked whether Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was a “one-and-done” event, Boomer told TV Line in an April 12 article, "For now, it is. I'm an old man. I'm very tired, but it was such a great experience, and I think creatively, it really worked. So, you never know. I don't think it would have happened the way it happened if the idea was to do an entire series again."

While Muniz told TV Line that he “would love to be Malcolm again,” but the intention of coming back to the series for a revival was just to tell the story at hand and nothing beyond that. Like Boomer, though, Muniz seems to be open to other possibilities.

“The intention of this was just these four episodes, Muniz told TV Line. “I don’t think it was made with the intention of being a test or that more could come from it, but you never know what will happen. If people love it, maybe.”

Originally, Muniz said, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was a movie, but eventually it morphed into an episodic format.

“It would start and an hour-and-a-half later it would end and that would be it,” Muniz told TV Line. “But we're calling it four episodes. It's one storyline that goes over those four episodes. That was the [only] intention of filming this."

Original Malcolm in the Middle cast members Chris Kennedy Masterson (Francis), Justin Berfield (Reese) and Emy Coligado (Piama) returned for Life’s Still Unfair, but Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the series from 2000 to 2006, opted not to return for the series revival. Sullivan was replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

In addition to Keely Karsten playing Malcolm’s daughter, new cast members for the revival include Vaughan Murrae, who plays Malcolm’s youngest sibling, Kelly, and Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’s four episodes and all 151 episodes of the original Malcolm in the Middle series are streaming on Hulu on Disney+.
