Madonna Blocked From A New No. 1 Hit By One Of Today’s To...

Madonna's "I Feel So Free" nearly launches at No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Downloads chart, but it's stopped from ruling by "Drop Dead" by Olivia Rodrigo. After months, if not years, of teasing a sequel to her album Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madonna is wasting no time when it comes to promoting the forthcoming Confessions II. The pop icon recently delivered “I Feel So Free,” selecting it as the first single from the full-length, but it won’t stand alone for long.

On the last day of April, Madonna will team up with current pop hitmaker Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” which may become a standout from the album and a breakaway smash. Before the world gets to hear “Bring Your Love” in full, “I Feel So Free” nearly nets Madonna a new No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom, but another female pop superstar blocks her from the top spot.

Madonna’s “I Feel So Free” Barely Misses No. 1

“I Feel So Free” launches on three rankings in the U.K., and it’s an instant top 10 on one of them. Madonna’s latest kicks off its time in second place on the Official Singles Downloads chart, the rundown of the top-selling songs on platforms like iTunes throughout that nation.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drop Dead,” the first tune shared from her forthcoming third album You Seem Pretty Sad for Girls So in Love, debuts at No. 1. The Grammy winner doubles her total number of leaders, as both her most recent release and her first single “Drivers License” ruled the tally.

“Hung Up” Earned Madonna Her First Hit – and First No. 1

Madonna nearly lands a third champion on the Official Singles Downloads chart this week. Coincidentally, her first placement on the roster and initial ruler hit the ranking in the fall of 2005. “Hung Up,” which fronted the original Confessions on a Dance Floor, spent seven weeks running the show. Three years later, “4 Minutes,” which also credits Justin Timberlake in the U.K. – but oddly, not producer Timbaland, who did earn a hit as an artist in the U.S. – managed four stays in the penthouse.

Madonna’s “Sorry” Also Stalled at No. 2

Just one other tune by Madonna stalled one spot shy of ruling the Official Singles Downloads chart, and it was her second hit. “Sorry,” another promotional track from Confessions on a Dance Floor, surged as high as No. 2 after arriving in February 2006. Two other songs taken from the full-length, “Get Together” and “Jump,” joined later that year, and while both cracked the top 40, neither made a serious play for the top space.

Madonna’s “I Feel So Free” Debuts on Multiple Charts

As “I Feel So Free” almost dominates the downloads chart, the song also arrives on two of the U.K.’s most competitive lists. “I Feel So Free” enters the Official Singles Sales ranking, which is built using downloads data as well as purchases of CDs, cassettes, and vinyl, at No. 18. The first Confessions II composition also sneaks onto the Official Singles chart, the main ranking of the most-consumed cuts in the country – and the only tally where both sales and streams matter – at No. 90.

“La Bombola” and “Into the Groove” Launched Recently

“I Feel So Free” marks Madonna’s third debut on the Official Singles Downloads chart in 2026 alone. In January, “La Bombola,” which she recorded in conjunction with a Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign, hit No. 24. Last month, “Into the Groove” finally became a bestseller, and it rose even higher, peaking at No. 17.

On the Official Singles Sales chart. “Into the Groove” debuted back in May 2017, while “La Bombola” arrived at the same time that it placed on the downloads roster.

“Vulgar” Marked Madonna’s Last Major Chart Entry

While Madonna can reliably rack up sales hits anytime she shares something new, breaking onto the Official Singles chart, the most competitive of all songs lists in the U.K., is much more difficult. Madonna has not scored a new placement on that rundown since the summer of 2023, when she joined Sam Smith on “Vulgar.” That collaboration spent one frame at No. 69 before being largely forgotten.
