From OpenAI and Anthropic to Mistral AI, Suno, Cursor, Perplexity and Harvey, this year’s list highlights startups prioritizing control, cost and real-world application over raw model power

NEW YORK — April 16, 2026 — Forbes today released its 2026 AI 50 list, highlighting a clear shift in the artificial intelligence race: success is no longer just about building the most powerful model, but about who controls it, how it’s used and what it costs to run.

While leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to push the boundaries, a new class of companies, like Lovable, Black Forest Labs and Reflection AI, are gaining traction by building AI that is more efficient, customizable and easier to deploy across real-world environments.

Forbes’ 2026 AI 50 companies have collectively raised $305.6 billion, $182.6 billion of which has been raised by AI juggernaut OpenAI.

“This year’s list shows the AI race is no longer just about who builds the most powerful model, but who finds ways to productize AI in new and innovative ways and build sustainable businesses on top,” said Rashi Shrivastava, Forbes staff writer. “What we’re seeing is a transition from a race defined by breakthroughs to one defined by ownership, infrastructure and influence, where the stakes are not just technological leadership, but economic power and global impact.”

Key Trends and Highlights Defining This Year’s AI 50:

  • Breaking dependence on Big AI: Companies are looking for ways to reduce reliance on a handful of dominant platforms
  • Efficiency over size: Cost and performance are becoming as important as scale
  • Industry-specific AI grows: Companies are adopting AI tailored to their industries, from healthcare to legal services
  • AI agents enter the workplace: Software is beginning to handle tasks that once required human teams
  • Access to computing power is a competitive edge: The companies that can secure and afford the infrastructure behind AI have a clear advantage
  • Four female-led companies: EliseAI, Fireworks AI, Thinking Machine Labs and World Labs made this year’s Forbes’ AI 50 list.
  • 20 newcomers: Newcomers include Gamma, Black Forest Labs, Chai Discovery, Applied intuition, Cognition, Genspark, Replit, Cyera, EliseAI, Fal, HeyGen, Krea, Legora, ListenLabs, Lovable, Physical Intelligence, ReflectionAI, Rogo, SurgeAI and SSI, showing how quickly the space is evolving and expanding.
  • 33 startups are headquartered in California. The rest spread from Miami, Colorado to New York to Germany, Paris and London.

The 2026 AI 50 includes companies across North America, Europe and beyond, with growing influence from cities like Paris, London, Stockholm and Toronto.

Featured companies on the list include:

  • OpenAI
  • Anthropic
  • Mistral
  • Perplexity
  • Cognition and Cursor
  • Sierra and Decagon
  • Harvey
  • Abridge and OpenEvidence
  • Runway, Midjourney and Synthesia
  • Databricks, Crusoe and SambaNova

Many companies on this year’s list were founded within the past three years yet already command multibillion-dollar valuations, highlighting the speed of AI innovation.

This year’s Forbes AI 50 list included an expert panel of judges such as AI researcher Joy Buolamwini, Aaref Hilaly, partner at Bain Capital Ventures, Sarah Guo, founder of AI-native venture capital firm Conviction, Matt Murphy, partner at Menlo Ventures, among others.

This year, Forbes launched its first ever AI 50 Brink list to highlight 20 up-and-coming early stage AI startups

Methodology

Applicants are evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative information including technical abilities, revenue, business growth and valuation. Two panels of independent judges — one with academic or professional expertise in AI, and the other with long-standing investing experience in the field — scrutinize the strongest applicants on criteria like business promise and innovative use of AI. There is no fee for entry or consideration. Eligible startups who submit for the main list will be automatically entered into candidacy for our first annual Brink List, which recognizes earlier stage, rising companies.

The list was compiled with the support of data partners including Sequoia Capital and Meritech Capital, evaluating companies based on innovation, market impact, funding and growth. The AI 50 and Brink List was made possible by sponsoring partner Mayfield.
