Topline

President Donald Trump went on a posting spree Friday night in which he uploaded a bizarre string of mostly AI-generated photos to Truth Social, including a photo of himself sunbathing shirtless in the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool with members of his Cabinet and another of his face imposed on Mount Rushmore.

Key Facts

The first photo, posted just after 11 p.m. Friday, depicted Trump swimming shirtless in the reflecting pool, which is currently undergoing a high-profile renovation, alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and an unidentified woman in a bikini.

Over the 41 minutes that followed, he posted 10 more times, uploading a meme of himself holding a handful of "wild" cars from the game Uno alongside the caption "I have all the cards" and then a photo of his own face superimposed at one end of Mount Rushmore, next to Abraham Lincoln.

He uploaded a low-quality screenshot of a photo Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had posted to his own social media accounts last summer, in which he’s holding a baseball bat, and called Jeffries “low IQ”—an insult he has frequently used against Black people and women—and a “thug.”

He also posted photos of his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, one of him standing next to Britain's King Charles taken during the royal’s visit last week and several rendering-style photos of his planned changes to the reflecting pool.

Key Background

Trump last week announced a renovation to the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool that has anchored the Washington D.C. Mall for more than 100 years. He said he plans to coat the granite structure in a commercial-grade pool liner in a color called "American Flag Blue,” a move seen as a cheaper alternative to major repairs needed to fix long-standing leaks. One of the photos Trump posted shared a close-up of algae growing in the current pool under the name "Hussein Obama" (the photo is dated Sept. 29, 2012, when Barack Obama was president) next to a rendering of the pool after the liner is installed. Trump captioned the post, “This is what our Country was before, and after, ‘TRUMP!’” The decision to renovate has drawn the ire of historic preservation experts, who’ve questioned the aesthetic choice and said it spits in the face of efforts to preserve the look of the nation’s capital. “The reflecting pool is hallowed ground,” Charles Birnbaum, former coordinator of the National Park Service’s Historic Landscape Initiative, told Politico. “It shouldn’t resemble a swimming pool.”

Surprising Fact

The reflecting pool was vandalized overnight Thursday. Graffiti measuring roughly 15 by 30 feet was discovered at the site Friday morning, and U.S. Park Police have since launched an investigation. The graffiti featured the numbers “86 47," a phrase combining the colloquial use of the number “86” (meaning to get rid of or reject) and 47 representing Trump, the 47th president. Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted last week for posting a photo of seashells spelling out the phrase last summer. The Justice Department has alleged the post was a threat against the president. Comey said his message was misinterpreted.
