Star Wars films are back, and The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the first installment in the long-running franchise to debut on the big screen in seven years.
The sci-fi spinoff serves as a continuation of the popular Disney+ television series, The Mandalorian. Series creator and filmmaker Jon Favreau returns to helm the feature, which stars Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt.
“The evil Empire has fallen but Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy,” Disney’s synopsis reads. “As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.”

In an April 2026 interview with StarWars.com, Favreau teased that the film tells Grogu’s (aka Baby Yoda) coming-of-age story.
“If you’re watching it through the eyes of Grogu, he is coming into his own," he explained. "He's starting to take on more and his dad [Din Djarin, the Mandalorian played by Pedro Pascal] is trusting him with more responsibility.”

Critics have given The Mandalorian and Grogu mixed reviews, with the film earning a 63% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes on the day of its release, while audiences gave it an 88% audience score.
In a review for TheWrap, film critic William Bibbiani praised the movie as “the most purely entertaining Star Wars movie since the 1980s,” while adding that “it’s hardly the most meaningful or ambitious.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu is part of the Star Wars franchise and is distributed by The Walt Disney Company’s Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film will eventually debut on Disney+, where the first three seasons of The Mandalorian are currently available to stream.
Based on Disney’s recent release patterns, The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to arrive on the platform roughly three to four months after its theatrical debut. That would put the movie’s likely Disney+ release window sometime between Aug. 22, 2026, and Sept. 22, 2026.
For comparison, Disney’s Zootopia 2 — the second-highest-grossing animated movie of all time — debuted on Disney+ on March 11, 2026, just over three months after its theatrical release. Disney movies like Freakier Friday, Fantastic Four: First Steps, Captain America: Brave New World and Mufasa: The Lion King all followed a similar three- to four-month streaming timeline.

Don’t want to wait until late summer to watch The Mandalorian and Grogu at home? Before the film lands on Disney+, it is expected to debut on digital video-on-demand platforms.
Like most major studio releases, the Star Wars film will likely first become available for digital purchase and rental on services such as Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Pricing will likely fall in line with around $29.99 to purchase and $24.99 to rent.
Studios usually opt to release theatrical films digitally about 45 to 65 days after their big-screen debuts. Based on that pattern, The Mandalorian and Grogu could arrive on digital as early as early-to-mid July 2026. For comparison, Zootopia 2 became available on digital platforms roughly 60 days after its theatrical release.
