May 5 update. This post, first published on May 2, has been updated with further details of when the long-awaited update may finally land and what may come before it.

Samsung’s latest software, One UI 8.5, was expected to launch for millions of Galaxy phones from April 30. But nothing’s happened yet. Here’s what’s going on, and details of exactly when users can expect to see the release. There’s also a new report which suggests that before the rollout, the roadmap will be revealed. More on that below.

The Missing S25 Rollout

One UI 8.5 is already on the latest S26 series of phones. But its expected release for the S25 series hasn’t happened yet. When it eventually arrives, it will add new features and visual upgrades without the need to splash out on the latest model.

Samsung has said that April 30 was never the official date for the rollout to start. Since May 1 is Labor Day in Korea, a rollout beginning hours before a public holiday could have proven tricky for support teams.

“Please note that Beta schedules are not finalized until officially confirmed by Samsung, and timelines may change depending on testing results or regional considerations,” the company said in a One UK Beta Team community site.

New Likely Release Window

Which means that Monday, May 4 is the date that seems most likely. This could be for Korean users only, at first, with international rollout beginning after that.

“Samsung plans to release the stable version of One UI 8.5 for most eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets between May 4, 2026, and May 30, 2026. This means the stable build of the new software for your device could be less than a month away,” SamMobile claimed.

That date has arrived with no sign of the release. However, a new report from Sammy Fans suggests there may not be long to wait. The site claimed that May 4 was being “avoided due to regional considerations, “ and quoted an online chat with a Samsung representative. This didn’t give a new date but said that “we will post an update notice in the announcements section of the Samsung Members app at the time of the product update.”

Sammy Fans went on to give a date prediction. “Our assumptions point to May 6 for South Korea, followed by Global markets within a week. A Canadian moderator ruled out the possibility of a simultaneous rollout for a wide range of models, so an undefined delay is likely.”

There are many updates in One UI 8.5, including support for Quick Share’s latest feature, compatibility with Apple iPhone to make wireless transfer between Android and Apple devices as smooth and seamless as it is with AirDrop.

Other major additions include Perplexity-powered Bixby, AI-driven Photo Assist, and real-time Audio Eraser to filter background noise from media.

“Beta testers also praise the software’s fluidity and stability, as compared to the One UI 8.0 software,” Sammyfans has said.

Before The Rollout Begins, The Roadmap

In the earlier report, Sammy Fans says that while it’s still possible that the software may arrive as soon as Wednesday, May 6, Samsung is likely to reveal the roadmap for One UI 8.5 first. This was also gleaned from talking to a Samsung representative via an online chat.

“Chat support declined to give a timeline, but hinted that the One UI 8.5 roadmap will be published under the Notice section of the Members app,” the report said.

“Roadmap is a well-crafted chart that carries an update schedule for various devices,” Sammy Fans explained. “Samsung usually sticks to its rollout plans unless a major flaw is identified. That said, the roadmap will be a crucial development in One UI 8.5 story.”

It also said that previous roadmaps have indicated that Germany was among the first place to get the latest updates, but that, “Samsung now prefers its home ground,” indicating that Korean users will be the first to see the update.

One other detail about regional issues holding back the release. As mentioned above, the Labor Day holiday on May 1 meant no April 30 release was under consideration, but May 5 is also a holiday. It seems it’s Children’s Day in Korea.

Wikipedia has the details. “The day on which to esteem the personalities of children and plan for their happiness. In Korea, Children's Day started on May 1, 1922, when 8 people including Bang Jeong-hwan (방정환) declared the Day and held an anniversary. In 1946, the Day changed to May 5, and became a public holiday in 1975,” it explained.
