This year marks the 75th anniversary of the release of one of Disney’s most beloved animated films: Alice In Wonderland. And AV fans will be delighted to hear that Disney is marking the occasion by releasing a new 4K restoration of the film on 4K Blu-ray on May 5.
According to Disney’s information about the Alice In Wonderland 4K release, the new restoration took more than nine months to complete, as restoration artists completed a digital scan of the original nitrate Successive Exposure negative, and then applied an extensive clean-up process to address issues of dust, warping and simple age-related wear.

To ensure the final results remain true to the original filmmakers’ intent, the restoration team referenced original production artwork preserved by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library, as well as collaborating with Walt Disney Animation Studios veteran Michael Giaimo to refine the color and luminance of each and every shot.
“The original animation artists’ work on Alice in Wonderland is stunning, and we’re proud to present it with renewed clarity and vibrancy,” said Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management. “This milestone restoration brings new depth and dimension to the film’s imaginative world, offering a vibrant presentation for longtime fans and a new generation of audiences alike.”
The remastered Alice In Wonderland looks as if it’s going to be released in a standard 4K Blu-ray package rather than the limited edition Steelbook approach Disney takes with some of its 4K Blu-ray titles.
MORE FOR YOU
The film is going to be presented on 4K disc in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio (the digital version is going to be presented at 1.37:1, strangely), with the 4K resolution accompanied by Dolby Vision HDR. This will default down to standard HDR10 with displays or 4K Blu-ray players that don’t support Dolby Vision.
Audio on the 4K Blu-ray will be available in both DTS-HDMA 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital Mono tracks, depending on how authentic to the original release you want your viewing experience to be. The 4K remaster has been placed on a 66GB 4K Blu-ray rather than the larger 100GB option, but that shouldn’t be a problem for picture quality on this occasion given that Alice In Wonderland is only 75 minutes long.
