The Pitt
HBO
In the wake of The Pitt’s season 2 finale, there are a surprising amount of spoilers coming out for season 3, and they’re being given by those actually working on the show. That includes details about Robby not adopting that baby and in the end, going on his bike trip, but past that, other things are being discussed as well, like this persistent idea of The Pitt: Night Shift, a self-explanatory spinoff.
Things aren’t looking great. In an interview with Deadline, Noah Wyle answered the question about whether The Pitt: Night Shift would come to fruition:
“Anything is possible, but it’s not probable,” Wyle said. And showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, “I like touching base with the night shift when we can because it’s a whole different dynamic.”
“Touching base” is not a 15-episode series, of course. And this isn’t the first time Wyle has talked about it. In another interview with The Wrap, a few days earlier, he said, “You’re getting just enough night shift. You don’t want any more. You think you do, but you don’t.”

I think he’s sort of being funny, even if the result is, in fact, going to be no new show. But one person who does want the Night Shift series is the person who would lead it, Dr. Abbott’s Shawn Hatosy, who won an Emmy for the role. Here’s what he said to People, previously:
“There's been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show," he said.
Despite what’s being said here, HBO might have a different opinion. The Pitt is a mega-hit for the service, winning Emmys and putting up big viewership. Obviously, Wyle is integral to the main show, not just as an actor, but also in shaping the series alongside Gemmill. I still don’t think this can be ruled out, even if it seems less likely than it was before. I mean, the finale had a literal huddle of what would be a huge chunk of a Night Shift cast, and they already have an Emmy-winner to lead it. I refuse to believe that HBO does not want 30 weeks of The Pitt a year if they can maintain the quality of both series. But if Wyle and Gemmill are meant to be involved, that may just be too much for them, who knows?
There will definitely not be The Pitt: Night Shift surprising us this year. It’s too late for that, as writing would have already started and the series would have obviously been announced. But later in 2027? Unlikely, but possible.
