Hey there, Connectors! Happy Friday! Let’s make sure you can slide into the weekend with your Connections streak intact.
I recently finished a rewatch of 24. It’s very problematic at times, but it’s still one of my favorite shows. I watched the reboot series, 24 Legacy, for the first time and dug that as well. I couldn’t find a way to watch the Indian or Japanese remakes of 24 legally, so I decided to check out another Kiefer Sutherland-led series, Designated Survivor.
He plays a U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who is toward the bottom of the presidential line of succession. However, almost the entire government is wiped out in an attack and his character ascends to the top job.
Following the initial attack in the pilot episode, Iran attempts to seize control of the Strait of Hormuz. And here’s me, hoping the show would be a piece of escapism! (I’m very much enjoying it after six episodes.)

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, April 17 are coming right up. Let’s get rolling!
Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.
Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.
There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.
As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.
Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

Today’s Connections answers are...
Lots of music theory words in the mix today including DOMINANT, KEY, ROOT, STEM. Since three of those were on the top line, I thought those would be a red herring. Instead, HAMMER and STRING made me realize that KEY should help form a group of piano parts for the blues (probably helps that I've been watching a lot of piano tuning and repair videos lately).
STEM then had to go with the rest of the yellows. I thought they'd be plant components, but close enough! The greens then assembled in my brain.
That left the purples. STORMY made me thing of Dark and Stormy, so I figured out that category before submitting it. The others refer to (I think) Club SODA, Black and TAN and Gin and TONIC.
That win extends my streak to 412 wins. How did you get on today? Here's my grid:

No Answers Explained column today, since I think the purples were the only group that needed any real spelling out, and I touched on the music theory red herring as well.
