Netflix's Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano

Ronda Rousey needed just 17 seconds to submit Gina Carano on Saturday night at MVP MMA 1. Rousey says she couldn't have hoped for a better final MMA fight, but not everyone looked at Rousey and the event through celebratory eyes.

Former UFC contender and current content creator Matt Brown slammed Rousey and the event in candid comments on an MMA Fighting podcast. Brown called the event 'cringe from top to bottom.' Brown also slammed Rousey as a narcissistic person.

  • Who: Matt Brown, retired UFC welterweight
  • Where: MMA Fighting's "The Fighter vs. The Writer" podcast
  • The Target: Ronda Rousey and the entire MVP MMA 1 card
  • The Result Being Discussed: Rousey submitted Gina Carano via armbar in 17 seconds
  • Event: MVP MMA 1, May 16, 2026, Intuit Dome (Netflix)
  • Viewership: Peaked at nearly 17 million global viewers
  • Rousey's Status: Retired again; eyeing an MVP executive role

What Did Matt Brown Say About Ronda Rousey?

Brown insists Rousey's comeback didn't do anything that would make fans of the MMA community like her again. He also said Rousey has a "lot of mental issues."

MORE FOR YOU

Brown's full assessment was blunt. He called Rousey a "narcissist" and said there were "no redeeming qualities" to the comeback, adding that she "maybe needs to go to therapy or something." It's worth noting Brown picked Carano to win beforehand, so his criticism wasn't sour grapes over a busted prediction — it was aimed squarely at how Rousey conducted herself. Rousey's 17-second armbar finish was clean, but Brown made clear the win did nothing to change his opinion of her.

Why Did Matt Brown Call MVP MMA 1 'Cringe'?

Brown took specific aim at the matchmaking. Like many others, Brown felt most of the fights were massive mismatches.

The main event was his prime example. Carano was 44 years old, hadn't fought in 17 years, and was outmatched the second the action started — she gave up a takedown almost immediately and fell into the armbar. Brown wasn't alone in the assessment, as r/MMA threads and other fighters echoed the "anticlimactic" and "nostalgia grab" framing, even if the card drew big eyeballs as a Netflix spectacle.

What Did Brown Say About How Rousey Promoted the Fight?

Brown didn't care for Rousey's persona during the promotion of the event. It felt like she was borrowing elements from her time in WWE, but Brown wasn't a fan.

Specifically, Brown took issue with Rousey's public targeting of UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell, whom she blamed for the Carano fight not coming together years ago, as well as her shots at current bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison. Brown did offer one caveat: a straight money motivation would have sat better with him than framing the win as competitive validation.

What's Next for Ronda Rousey After MVP MMA 1?

Fight promotion is seemingly next for Rousey. She could become one of the faces of MVP MMA. The 17 million reported viewers is a good step in the right direction.

Rousey announced her retirement from competition again after the win and has expressed interest in staying with Most Valuable Promotions in an executive capacity.

The numbers back up the platform's momentum: per the official release, the triple main card averaged 12.4 million viewers globally and peaked at nearly 17 million during Rousey-Carano, while the $2.2 million live gate and U.S. record audience suggest MVP MMA is here to stay, criticism or not.
