What I would argue is one of the most infamous levels in video games, Diablo 2’s The Cow Level, has not yet appeared in Diablo 4, a true return to the idea rather than whatever Whimsyshire was in Diablo 3. Despite the loading screen tips, it exists, and fans are right on the verge of unlocking it right now as they try to solve a game-spanning mystery. They’re not quite there yet, but you can already get ready to go for when everyone does figure it out.

We have the initial steps, which are a lot more complicated than getting Wirt’s Leg. Rather, it requires getting three different items and using the just-added Horadric Cube to combine them. You can get all three in the three portions of the game right now, but what you do after that is the complicated part. Here’s what you need:

• The Stamina Potion (Diablo 4 vanilla) – This was a quest discovered long ago that seemed like a tribute to the Cowl Level rather than a true unlock for it. It’s a rather long quest that, at one point, requires slaughtering 666 cows on the map. This is not terribly easy, and you’ll want a lengthy guide like this to go down the full path to end up with the item you need, the stamina potion.
• Rusted Bardiche (Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred) – This is another quest from the 2024 expansion, which requires getting three scrolls, hunting down different statues, finding a secret hovel and murdering more cows. Here’s the guide for that one.
• Neyrelle’s Hand (Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred) – This one was only just figured out, requiring you to trek around the map finding more relics, though some are reporting drop rates are awful, if some of these things are able to be dropped at all. Here’s a video guide for it that’s just launched.

• Torn Page – This is what you get when you combine all three of those, which will then require you to take a boat on the far east coast of Skovos. This will eventually take you to a Secret Cow Level island, which is…not the level itself, not yet, in any case. There are several rooms with clues and cows, and players have found that you can fish for mythic fish and actual cows on the island. But no one knows how to get into the actual level yet.

That’s where we are now, but again, you can do everything above to at least reach the point where everyone else is at. The main search is going on over at the Cow Level Discord, where players are parsing all the clues, and this is how anyone has gotten this far. I will update this post with more steps and when or if the Cow Level is finally unlocked, something we’ve now been waiting years for since the launch of Diablo 4.

Update: Well, they did it, and the actual Cow Level has been unlocked. The full reveal is a little disappointing as it isn’t like the old map, but it’s dropping some funny loot, at least. Here’s the vid:
