reMarkable, the Norwegian company that makes digital notebooks, has just unveiled its latest, the Paper Pure. It’s available to order now and first shipments will happen in early June.

The Paper Pure has a 10.3-inch black-and-white display (the Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move displays are color), and the reMarkable 2 is retired now the Paper Pure is here.

It’s different from the reMarkable 2 in that it’s smaller, despite the same-size display, lighter and has a crisper, whiter screen, the company says. Since digital notebooks are designed to be written on, the screen can be important.

The new notebook has a faster processor, so there’s lower writing latency, in order to mimic the look of writing more accurately. The display is also matte-finish and has a rough surface — you can’t see or feel this but it offers a little more resistance to feel like pen on paper.

It’s the same price as the reMarkable 2, costing from $399 (though it’s 359 in the U.K., which represents a £30 price cut compared to the last model) and it makes the Paper Pure the most affordable digital notebook in the range.

There are no apps or notifications to distract you when you’re using it, designed to boost creativity. It’s just you, a stylus and a blank canvas. The stylus is called the Marker, which comes supplied, though you can upgrade to the Marker Plus which has a built-in eraser.

The battery life is claimed to be up to three weeks (a week longer than the reMarkable 2).

Scribble and doodle with the stylus and, by selecting your scrawl, you can convert it to text, with largely successful results.

You can upload documents to the web where others can collaborate with you. Some features require a Connect subscription, $3.99 a month or $39 a year (£3.99 a month or £39 a year in the U.K.), but text conversion, for example, is free for everyone.
