A Big Update About ‘Running Point’ Season 3 On Netflix

Running Point

Netflix

After a not-that-long 14-month break, Running Point season 2 has hit Netflix and has instantly claimed the #1 spot on its top 10 list. The Kate Hudson sports series has retained its audience from last time, and after everyone has binged its 10 episodes over 5 hours, a question will immediately be raised. Will Running Point get a season 3?

In a post-season 2 interview with THR, showrunner David Stassen gave an update about that, and it is very promising for fans of the series:

“Netflix hasn’t officially picked up season three yet, but everyone is optimistic. Season one did very well, and Netflix has already shown a lot of faith by ordering the writers' room for a potential season three. So everyone is feeling good.”

Netflix ordering a writers’ room for Running Point is certainly a vote of confidence. It’s not impossible for a series with an existing writers’ room to end up being canceled, but that doesn’t happen frequently. Obviously, Netflix is waiting to see if it has kept its audience interested. That appears to be the case with this #1 debut, and I think it absolutely helps that this gap between seasons is just 14 months rather than 1.5-3 years the way we’re seeing with half of Netflix’s shows, many of whom do see dramatically reduced viewership when they return.

Running Point

Netflix

Half-hour comedies are comparatively cheap compared to other productions as well, and Running Point should fall into that territory. It does boast one A-lister in the form of its lead, Kate Hudson, but even so, I doubt her payday is going to break the bank. If you haven’t watched the show yet, here’s its synopsis:

“When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job.”

The show is well-liked, boasting double 80%+ scores on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, two groups that often don’t agree with each other.

This all seems like very good news, both its debut position and this update from the showrunner. And if the greenlight for Running Point season 3 hits soon, then another 14 months here would be July 2027. Maybe they could slim it down even further to be a true one-year gap, which Netflix is trying to do more often, where they can. The future of the show looks pretty bright, and it may end up running as long as those involved want it to, at this rate.
