Millions Of Samsung Galaxy Phones Are In Line For A Free Upgrade
Janhoi McGregor · 2026-06-14 · via Forbes - Innovation

This story was updated on June 13th with new devices included in the One UI 9 beta roll out. Update below.

Samsung is preparing to release its Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the highly anticipated Wide Fold, next month. Both will be powered by One UI 9, which the Korean company has been testing with beta users ahead of the launch. That update is now being internally tested for roll out on the Galaxy S25 series, the Galaxy A57, and the Galaxy A17.

The Galaxy S25 series is next in line for the One UI 9 beta, according to internal firmware that has surfaced on Samsung’s servers spotted by update tracker Tarun Vats on X.

At the same time, Samsung has begun testing One UI 9 builds for the Galaxy A57 and Galaxy A17, showing that the update is already in development well beyond flagship devices. Vats pointed out that Samsung's team "has been very active lately, with both stable rollouts and One UI 9 development moving forward at the same time."

That last part matters. Samsung is not waiting for the S25 beta to wrap before testing on mid-range and budget hardware. In short, the Korean company is moving quickly before the official launch next month.

How quickly? Samsung only launched the One UI 9 beta for the Galaxy S26 series on May 13. Beta 2 followed roughly two weeks later, while beta 3 is expected next week. It’s also worth noting that Samsung just finished its global rollout of One UI 8.5, which finally hit some of the cheapest phones in its roster.

The stable version of One UI 9 is expected to arrive first on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 when they launch at Galaxy Unpacked in July, before rolling out to the Galaxy S26 series and expanding to other devices the second half of 2026.

What’s Included In One UI 9?

Samsung Notes gains decorative tapes and a wider variety of pen line styles, and the Contacts app now connects directly to Creative Studio for personalised profile cards without switching between apps.

Elsewhere, the Quick Panel has been redesigned to give users independent control over brightness, sound, and the media player. Each is separately adjustable with more sizing options. Accessibility improvements include an adjustable Mouse Key speed, a combined TalkBack package merging Google and Samsung’s previously separate tools, and a new Text Spotlight feature that displays selected text in a floating window for easier reading. On security, One UI 9 now warns users when high-risk apps are detected, then blocking execution and installation.

That’s obviously not everything, Samsung said its May One UI 9 announcement that the “full experience” will come when the OS launches in July. The biggest part of that, of course, will be Samsung’s new AI tools.

Namely Gemini Intelligence, which Google demoed at I/O last month. The new agentic experience, that acts autonomously on the user’s behalf, is expected to be restricted to the most recent Samsung and Google phones. Check out the video of that in action below.

Update June 13th: These Additional Devices Will Be Eligible For One UI 9 Stable

More new AI-powered tools are coming to millions of Galaxy users. Spotted by Tarun Vats on X, Samsung is releasing two AI notification features to the S25 series that were missing from May's One UI 8.5 update.

Prioritise, which uses AI to surface your most important notifications first, and Summarise, which condenses long chat threads into a quick summary without opening the app. The rollout has already started in Korea.

With these two additions, the S25 has almost all the same Galaxy AI tools as the S26, including Audio Eraser, Creative Studio, an updated Photo Assist and Call Screening. A few gaps remain, including Now Nudge, some camera-specific features and hardware features like the privacy display, but the list separating the two phones keeps getting shorter.

There’s also a small but useful change coming with One UI 9 itself. According to Samsung tipster Ice Universe, the update finally adds a network speed indicator to the status bar. But, as Ice Universe points out, this feature has been available to Galaxy users in China for a while, it’s just now being rolled out more widely.

The eligible device list for One UI 9 is also clearer now, according to Tarun Vats. On the Z series, that's the Z Flip 7, Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7 FE, Z Fold 6, Z Flip 6, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, plus the Z Tri Fold and Z Fold Special Edition. On the A series, it covers the A57, A56, A55, A54 and their non-Pro siblings, down to the A25, A24, A17, A16, A15 and A07.

You can check if the upgrade is waiting for you by heading to settings, software update and then download and install.
