When Google updates the world’s most popular web browser, Chrome, and there are 16 security reasons why, it makes sense to pay attention. When two of those reasons are critical security vulnerabilities, even more so. But while Google Chrome’s Srinivas Sista has advised that the necessary update will be rolled out over the coming days and weeks, you don’t have to wait that long and take any chances. Here’s what we know about the latest Chrome security vulnerabilities and how to get hold of that all-important security update right now.

As Microsoft confirms new zero-day vulnerabilities targeting Windows users and already being exploited by attackers, and Google researchers uncover what they call the Holy Grail of Pixel 10 zero-day exploits, applying security updates as soon as you can has never been more vital. That’s certainly the case as 16 new security vulnerabilities are confirmed by the Google Chrome team, including two that have been given a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures severity rating of critical.
The two vulnerabilities in question are CVE-2026-9111, a use- after-free issue in WebRTC, the technology that allows the browser to communicate with mobile apps, and CVE-2026-9110, an inappropriate implementation in the Chrome user interface.
The good news is that Chrome updates automatically. Once the security update is available, you will be prompted to restart your browser. The patch will then install, and all is good again. The bad news is that you don’t know how long the wait will be for that update to reach you and protect your browser from attackers who will no doubt now be looking for ways to exploit the vulnerabilities. Indeed, Google Chrome’s Srinivas Sista is quite clear about this: “The stable channel has been updated to 148.0.7778.178/179 for Windows/Mac and 148.0.7778.178 for Linux, which will roll out over the coming days/weeks,” Sista said.

The really good news, though, is that it’s easy enough to jump the update queue and get that protection installed and working for you right now, in just a couple of steps. No waiting required.

The really good news, though, is that it’s easy enough to jump the update queue and get that protection installed and working for you right now, in just a couple of steps. No waiting required. Simply use the three-dot Chrome menu to select Help|About Google Chrome, and this will kickstart an update download and install process. Once the installation is complete, Chrome will prompt you to restart to activate the protection. And that is all there is to it. You’re welcome.
