The problem with Windows security updates is that while they are essential to protect your device and the data on it from attack, they can sometimes have unexpected and concerning consequences. So, when users installing the latest security update found themselves facing multiple system reboots, instead of the usual one, perhaps it was natural to suspect that another broken Windows 11 security update. Microsoft, however, has said that it is intentional behavior. Here’s what you need to know and why there’s no need for concern.
There has been a lot written about Secure Boot, as Windows users will be all too aware. From the fact that unsupported versions of Windows will not receive new certificates when the existing ones expire in June, to vulnerabilities that can bypass Secure Boot altogether. The latest concern has arisen as the rollout of new Secure Boot certificates for Windows 11 users started with the April 30 ecurity update. Per Windows Latest, “Windows is rebooting twice or even thrice after monthly updates.”
What is Secure Boot, do I hear you ask? Well, it’s the protection that stops your Windows device from loading insecure operating system images during boot-up, malware, spyware backdoors, the lot. To work properly, Secure Boot requires a valid security certificate, and these certificates expire after a set period, which brings us nicely to the current issue.
The optional security update for Windows users rolled out on April 30 included a replacement Secure Boot certificate. Microsoft said that the reboot behavior is intentional. “With recent and upcoming Windows updates over the next few months, a limited number of consumer and business devices might experience one additional restart during installation. This one‑time restart occurs after a Secure Boot certificate update is applied as part of the Secure Boot update process.” Although it should be noted that some users are experiencing three reboots rather than two. So, don’t panic, your Windows 11 security update is not broken; in fact, it’s working exactly as it should to help protect your device and data.
