AI Security 101: Mapping the AI Attack Surface

AI is changing the way organizations build, ship, and interact with software. And with it comes a new security reality.

As more teams adopt generative AI, foundation models, and custom pipelines, they’re also introducing a broader, more complex attack surface. One that most security programs weren’t built to handle. That’s the AI attack surface, and understanding it is key to managing risk in today’s cloud environments.

So, what exactly is an AI attack surface?

At its core, the AI attack surface is the collection of all the ways an AI system can be exploited, spanning  across data, infrastructure, applications, and users.

It includes every component that interacts with or powers AI: training data, models, APIs, pipelines, and more. And because AI systems are often built and deployed rapidly, and with input from many different teams, the attack surface can grow quickly and unpredictably.

How it’s different from traditional cloud attack surfaces

AI doesn’t replace traditional risks. It layers on top of them.

Security teams are still watching for exposed services, overly permissive identities, and unpatched systems. But with AI, new risks emerge: prompt injection, training data leakage, model poisoning, and untracked model usage. And these risks often stem from different parts of the organization, where security controls may not yet exist.

For example, an API endpoint exposing a model to end users can become a prompt injection vector. Or a shared storage bucket used for training data might accidentally leak sensitive information. These aren’t edge cases anymore. They’re becoming common.

A closer look at the AI attack surface

To better understand what’s at stake, it helps to break the AI attack surface down into a few key components:

  • Training data
    The foundation of any model. If it includes sensitive or proprietary data, that information could be leaked or unintentionally memorized by the model.

  • Model artifacts
    Trained models themselves can leak secrets, behave unpredictably, or be reused in insecure ways if not handled carefully.

  • AI pipelines
    Tools like MLflow, SageMaker, or Vertex AI orchestrate the lifecycle of models and often come with complex configurations and elevated access.

  • APIs and interfaces
    Many AI models are exposed via APIs. Without proper safeguards, they can be susceptible to prompt injection or other manipulation techniques.

  • Shadow AI
    Untracked or unsanctioned use of AI services by developers, data scientists, or business teams can create blind spots for security.

Each of these layers opens new paths for exploitation, and many of them fall outside the traditional areas that security teams monitor.

What happens when it goes wrong?

These risks aren’t theoretical. They’ve already led to major incidents. A few recent examples stand out:

  • 38TB of internal Microsoft data exposed
    Wiz researchers uncovered a misconfigured SAS token that led to the exposure of 38 terabytes of private data, including AI training files, internal documentation, and credentials.

  • BingBang prompt injection vulnerability
    In another case, Wiz discovered an issue in Bing’s AI features that allowed attackers to manipulate the model's output, showing how prompt injection can be used to control public-facing AI systems.

  • Cloud-wide key compromise
    The Storm-0558 breach wasn’t AI-specific, but it revealed how sensitive infrastructure (like authentication keys) can be targeted to gain access across large-scale systems, including those that power AI.

Five ways to reduce your AI risk

Securing AI doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are a few practical starting points:

  1. Map your environment
    Identify where AI is already being used — both formally and informally. Shadow AI is common, especially in fast-moving teams.

  2. Secure your training data
    Audit training sources for sensitive content, secrets, or personally identifiable information. Use access controls and logging to reduce exposure.

  3. Harden your ML infrastructure
    Apply the same rigor you would to production systems: limit permissions, monitor access, and scan configurations regularly.

  4. Monitor AI endpoints
    LLM interfaces and APIs should be treated as sensitive entry points. Watch for abuse, unexpected behavior, or excessive permissions.

  5. Build shared ownership
    AI adoption is often cross-functional. Security, dev, cloud, and data teams all play a role in reducing risk. Make sure everyone is aligned.
