The Stack acquires Runtime
Edward Targett · 2026-06-16 · via The Stack

The Stack has agreed to buy Runtime

We’re teaming up to build a powerful enterprise technology journalism platform for tech builders and buyers alike - and wanted to tell you first.

Here’s the very short version for the time-poor.

Tom Krazit is joining The Stack as Editor-in-Chief, effective today.

We are merging our Command Line and Runtime newsletters.

Subscribers will receive Runtime, from The Stack in your inbox three times a week, featuring the original reporting and interviews of The Stack, alongside the the independent news and analysis from Tom.

Here’s Runtime's Founder Tom:

"Runtime was founded around the idea that the people who need to understand how the world of enterprise technology is changing and evolving deserve journalism that centers their worldview; focused on their needs, their concerns, and their challenges, rather than the latest shiny new thing on offer. After I started talking to Ed and Nish earlier this year about the possibility of working together, I realized right away that The Stack had the exact same goal in mind.

"I'm very excited to join an excellent team with The Stack's editorial talent and business chops, and helping it grow into the most trusted global source of news and information about enterprise technology. We'll have a lot more to say about our upcoming plans over the next few months, but for now, expect the same reliable news and analysis we produced at Runtime over the last three years in your inbox three times a week, augmented by the great journalists at The Stack.

"Thanks so much to the readers and sponsors that made Runtime what it was over the last three years, none of this would have been possible without your help. Special thanks to the members of our Runtime Supporters program; we are putting that group on hiatus effective immediately and you should not be charged again, but please let me know if that happens. (Like Runtime, The Stack has been completely bootstrapped and is journalist-owned. Ed will say a little below about how you can support our combined future, should you wish...)

The next five years have the potential to completely reshape the enterprise technology landscape, and we plan to work very hard together to make sure you can find the most engaging and trustworthy content you need to do your jobs at The Stack.

Here's The Stack's Co-Founder Ed:

I’ve long admired Tom Krazit’s reporting, at Protocol and at Runtime.

Tom’s bootstrapped it into a real success that serves ~20,000+ highly engaged tech subscribers. If this were LinkedIn I’d say I’m “delighted” and you know what, I am! There are few people out there with Tom’s depth of experience and insight into the enterprise technology space (from Everything-as-a-service to SDLCs, cloud, hardware and beyond.)

Tom's taking the leadership of a growing editorial team on both sides of the Atlantic. You'll hear more from them in future editions of Runtime.

There’s lots more to come from us (including a massively overhauled website) soon. To Runtime subscribers new to The Stack, look out for our regular features like the Big Interview (up this week is Lloyds' Banking Group's Group COO), and Mary Branscombe’s deep dives (this week she’s looking at npm’s security changes), as well as with Tom’s excellent original work. (Grab him and say hi if you're at Databricks' Summit!)

Thanks to both The Stack's and Runtime's readers for your support.
